SJIS is an independent foundation, established on July 4, 2002, that is part of the judicial chain and is subsidized by the Government of St. Maarten, Ministry of Justice. The Foundation houses the Adult Probation and Family Guardianship departments. The unit Foster Family Central is an important supporting role for the Family Guardianship department.
